During the 1930s, the United States was struck by a terrible depression. The stock market crashed and thousands were left without homes or jobs. As the food supply dwindled, a somber mood settled upon the nation. It was in these times that the Burpee Museum was created, in an effort to ease the effects of the Great Depression and provide jobs for those left destitute.
The results of Burpee’s creation were immediate. Not only did it provide jobs for dozens of people, but it also served as a beacon of hope in those troubled times. Without its implementation, Rockford and the surrounding communities would have found it even more difficult to cope with the Depression.
In the decades following the Depression, Burpee Museum continued to provide a steady source of employment for many in our community. A great interest still lies in the services the museum offers, and as long as that interest remains, Burpee will continue to be a distinguished part of our community.
In recent years, Burpee has conducted several renovation projects with the help of volunteers. These projects have had a profound effect on the local community by uniting everyone on a common goal: The improvement of one of everyone’s favorite local attractions. The efforts given by volunteers have been truly remarkable, the direct result of the inspiration elicited by the museum.
