Performing Arts

Band

ms_band6th Grade
This band class is comprised of sixth grade students with previous band experience, or by approval of the teacher. Class time is spent learning how to read, interpret, and perform music excellently, continuing with Standard of Excellence, Book 1 and beginning Book 2. Upon completion, we use sheet music (handed out by the teacher and then considered the responsibility of the student). The goal of this class is to develop self-discipline, teamwork, and skill as a musician. Students are required to perform in the Christmas and spring concerts.

7th & 8th Grade
This band class is comprised of seventh and eighth grade students with previous band experience. Class time is spent learning how to read, interpret, and perform music excellently, continuing with Standard of Excellence, Book 2 and introduction to Book 3. The goal is for students to develop self-discipline, teamwork, and skill as a musician. Students are required to perform in the Christmas and spring concerts. Eighth grade students will have the opportunity to perform at the high school graduation and in pre-approved pep and marching band events.


Choir

6th Grade
This choir class is performance oriented. No auditions required. First semester focuses on learning about proper singing techniques as well as learning some basics about reading music notation – pitch and rhythm. This choir joins with the MS Choir to perform at the MS band/choir Christmas concert. 6th grade choir may perform their Christmas music at other events as opportunities arise. Second semester brings added concepts as drama is incorporated into the curriculum, culminating with a drama/music presentation of some sort. Grades are based on participation and some written tests. Performances are required.

7th & 8th Grade
This choir class is performance oriented. No auditions required. MS Choir joins with the 6th grade choir in performance at the MS band/choir Christmas concert. The MS choir also performs at the mall during the Christmas season, and at other events as opportunities arise. Second semester brings some added concepts as drama is incorporated into the curriculum, culminating with a drama/music presentation, many times a musical. Grades are based on participation and some written tests. Performances are required.


Art

6th Grade
Students continue to learn art concepts and refine their skills from elementary art. The hands-on activities will allow students to use tactile, kinesthetic, and spatial sensory channels to experience the challenges of this next level of art. Projects are graded by a point system.

7th & 8th Grade
This course is a combination of art history and art appreciation, designed to expose students to a variety of art media and techniques. Quizzes and tests based upon art methods and art history will support the objective aspect of this course; however, the main portion of the class will be the subjective evaluation
of twelve to fifteen major projects that must be completed during the course of each semester.
